A small split-level cottage in Dublin is to be extended for a single occupant, creating a single large bedroom at first floor rear. The ground floor is to be opened up from the high-ceilinged formal room in the south-facing front of the house, through to the small yard at the rear. At the back of the yard is a studio with a roof strip light.
The first floor now becomes a relatively large bedroom suite, with bathroom and terrace. Due to planning considerations of overlooking, the terrace is to be lit from the top only, and present a closed wall to the rear of the property. The existing rear roof slope is to be peeled back and replaced with glass to afford daylight to the entrance hall and centre of the plan. The owner will enjoy a totally private bedroom world, secluded even from the living space downstairs. This project was featured in Wallpaper magazine in 2012.
