This project for an extension to a house in Donnybrook facing north at the rear provides a new kitchen and dining area at garden level and a bedroom suite at first floor. The existing roof is cut at the centre of the plan to allow direct sunlight from the south to penetrate the section, aided by a reflecting wall inclined to the sun.
A large central terrace at first floor level, which overlooks the double height dining space, acts as a roof garden between the children’s bedrooms to the front and the parents bedroom and bathroom to the rear. The latter enjoys a smaller terrace to the rear overlooking the garden. Both terraces overlook the double-height dining space. Another cut is made to make a triangular terrace to the side of the existing roof which allows sunlight to illuminate the new den at attic level.
